In the sweltering heat of a small Florida town, corrupt police officer Abby Matthews (played by a talented actress like Emma Stone or Scarlett Johansson) lives a life of luxury and privilege. Her marriage to a wealthy businessman, Ted, is loveless but convenient. Abby's only solace is her secret affair with a charming and manipulative stranger, Darin.

The farther she sinks into corruption and desperation, the more she loses control. With her marriage, career, and relationships disintegrating, Abby must choose between her selfish desires and the pursuit of justice.
One fateful night, Abby's world implodes when she's involved in a hit-and-run accident that kills a young black man, Ricky. Panicked, Abby and Darin dispose of the body and concoct a cover-up. However, when Ricky's family, led by his fiery and determined mother, Gloria, begins to investigate, Abby's carefully constructed facade starts to crumble.
