The use of padded cells in prisons has been the subject of significant debate in the field of criminology. Some argue that padded cells are a necessary tool for managing violent or suicidal inmates, providing a safe and controlled environment that minimizes the risk of harm to self or others (Hagan, 2016). However, our analysis also revealed several negative consequences associated with the use of padded cells. Inmates housed in padded cells reported higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, and were more likely to engage in destructive behavior, such as throwing feces or urine. Furthermore, the use of padded cells was associated with increased tensions between inmates and staff, as well as higher rates of recidivism among inmates who were eventually released.
