Traditional charts left her learners staring at symbols; textbooks offered rules but no consistent sound bank. Senumy changed that. She could pull up a minimal pair—“ship” [ʃɪp] versus “sheep” [ʃiːp]—and play clips from four dialects in sequence. Students could see the symbols, hear the exemplars, and record themselves directly in the browser to compare waveforms and pitch contours. The library’s short usage notes helped them understand not just how the sounds differed acoustically, but why native speakers used one variant in quick speech and another in formal contexts.
For Maja, Senumy was more than a tool; it was a reminder of what practical scholarship could look like: collaborative, precise, and attentive to real users. It didn’t chase novelty.
